In Canada's first A final of the World Rowing U23 Championships in Amsterdam, the men's four ended up fourth overall.
In this event, Germany won gold in 5:48.12, Italy was a close second in 5:48.37 and Greece (5:55.40) beat out Canada (5:56.99) for the bronze, followed by Spain and the U.S.
The crew is David Lariviere (Hamilton, ON), David Wakulich (St. Catharines, ON), Blake Parsons (Toronto, ON), and Spencer Crowley (Lantzville, BC).
In the lightweight women's single, Patricia Obee of Victoria was second in her semifinal today and advances to the A final.
"It was a good piece," said Obee of the fast racing on the Bosbaan course. "I am looking forward to building on it in tomorrow's final."
Katherine Copeland of Great Britain was first in 7:38.90, followed by Obee in 7:41.69, and the Dutch lightweight sculler in 7:42.97. These three will face Belarus, Sweden and Belgium in tomorrow's final.
The young Canadian lightweight women's double was fifth in today's semi in 7:15.83, and proceed to the B final for places 7 to 12. This crew is Elizabeth Fenje of Victoria, BC, and Sydney Boyes of St. Catharines, ON.
The Canadian lightweight men's four finished sixth in its semi (6:14.89), and will also row in a B final. This crew is Ian Connell of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Eric Woelfl of St. Catharines, ON, Stuart Taylor of Brockville, ON, and Sylas Coletto of Vineland, ON.
The men's pair (Benjamin de Wit of Nakusp, BC, and Adam Rabalski of Guelph, ON) was third in its C final, finishing 15th overall.
According to FISA, this first day of finals in Amsterdam, Netherlands, saw new World Best Times being set as crews "enjoyed tailwind conditions and a jump in competitiveness at the biggest World Rowing Under 23 Championships ever."
